Bedd Arthur – Arthur’s Grave – Pembrokeshire, Wales

Bedd Arthur, or Arthur’s Grave in the Preseli Hills.. one of many sites claimed to be the being the final resting place of King Arthur.. This site boasts spectacular views of the surrounding hills.

Thought to be from the neolithic period.. This subrectangular, or horseshoe enclosure 18m by 7m. consists of thirteen upright stones and at least 2 fallen ones and has a barely visible oval bank and ditch.

The stones appear to be leaning inwards, which could suggest that they were originally places on the flanks of a mound which has since disappeared. There is also one “truncated end”, similar to the portal on some elongated Neolithic burial mounds.

According to Coflein –

“Survey work by Wainwright and Darvill for the SPACES project has compared the oval stone setting at Bedd Arthur to the first oval setting of Bluestone orthostats built at Stonehenge. Oval stone settings are a recognised form of monument in the Neolithic and Bronze Ages of Britain, but remain rare. Such arrangements of stones are also found at a site known as the ‘Churchyard’ on Skomer Island, and were adopted at Stonehenge, for which and Bedd Arthur has been speculatively suggested as a prototype.”

We like to park at the P symbol on the second map image provided. From here we walk up the rather steep hill toward Carn Sian, Carn Bica and then to Bedd Arthur. This is a beautiful walk.. You are often gifted with the sight of wild Welsh mountain ponies grazing on the hills..

In this video we explore the history and legends of Gors Fawr stone circle and then head over to Bedd Arthur:
